- Lay of the Land: Examine the existing site as a starting point for design of the outdoor space. Study the conditions including sun, wind, circulation, vegetation and views. From there, explore ideas for what an ideal site might look like.
- Big Moves: Select from three main aesthetic arrangements: all lined up, voluptuous curves or on the angle. Identify a theme, style or "big idea" that pulls together the entire vision.
- Comfort Zones: Learn about the four comfort zones around your home: surrounding, welcoming, neighboring and living. Understanding the four zones helps define where different activities should take place and how best to design for them.
- Making it Flow: Movement around and through a landscape has an effect on how people feel and respond to their surrounds. Explore ways to enhance the flow of a property using three different types of motion: moving, pausing and stopping.
- Placing the Pieces: Place focal points (the objects that stand out as the center of attention) and frames (vertical and horizontal borders) in order to compose the landscape in a harmonious whole.
